Justice at Work has a general policy of not relying on unpaid interns or volunteers to do our core work. This reflects:
a) recognition of the value of the work we do;
b) a desire for people with less privilege to access our team (as most unpaid volunteers reflect privilege);
c) a goal of our accounting for the resources it takes to accomplish; and
d) time and energy it takes to on-board/train people whose commitment is indefinite.
We’ve made exceptions for students who earn credit toward graduation through interning with us. Most of our summer interns have funding through programs such as the Forest Foundation (good resource for undergrads) or Peggy Browning (law student only).
If the right candidate came along, who couldn’t access any other funding, we might figure out a way to pay them from our funds.
Interested candidates can send an email to info@jatwork.org or tsmith@jatwork.org with a cover letter and resume.
The major exception we have regarding unpaid volunteer and intern time is one-off programmatic events, such as legal clinics, and development-related projects, such as phone-banking and events. We encourage interested volunteers to contact us for those projects. They can email Keally Cieslik (kcieslik@jatwork.org) for programmatic events and Connie Rab (crab@jatwork.org).
