ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:

Justice at Work is a Boston-based legal nonprofit founded in 2011 to strengthen worker organizing by providing strategic legal support to low-wage worker organizations and their members. Justice at Work envisions all workers having the voice and power to ensure safe and healthy conditions, fair wages, dignity, and respect on an ongoing basis. To help that vision become reality, we build capacity through legal training and technical assistance; provide direct legal services and access to legal resources and advocacy; and counsel groups of workers at specific workplaces or across industries in their efforts to improve working conditions.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Justice at Work is seeking a dynamic candidate to execute its legal services and training programs. The successful candidate will:

  1. Have experience with or direct knowledge of the challenges and opportunities facing immigrant and other workers in low-paying and precarious jobs.
  2. Share a commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and to Justice at Work’s mission.
  3. Be licensed to practice law, preferably in Massachusetts. (Or have a willingness to take next Massachusetts’ bar.)
  4. Be a strong bilingual communicator.  (Spoken and written Spanish and English required; other languages including Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Cantonese, and Mandarin also beneficial).
  5. Have a background in, or a deep commitment to learn, employment and labor law.
  6. Have experience with and understanding of worker centers and community organizations.

 

Responsibilities will include:

 

Legal Services, Strategic Legal Counsel, and

Training for Worker Center Organizers and Members (85%)

  1. Performing legal intakes, in person and over the phone, of worker grievances specific to workplace-related abuses.
  2. Representing workers in legal matters and/or providing ongoing case support with other attorneys.
  3. Drafting, filing and litigating complaints with government agencies and in courts.
  4. Researching employment, labor and immigration law.
  5. Counseling groups of workers and their organizations engaged in actions to improve conditions at specific workplaces or across industries.
  6. Performing policy advocacy on behalf of worker centers with government labor agencies and legislative bodies.
  7. Training worker center members and staff on workplace-related laws and providing advice, referral and representation for worker center members with workplace legal issues.
  8. Performing know-your-workplace-rights presentations in English, Spanish and/or Portuguese, including occasional evenings and Saturdays.

Supporting Legal Program Administration and Development (15%)

  1. Strategizing development of and helping to maintain a network of private and legal aid attorneys who serve worker centers.
  2. Managing the recruitment and supervision of student interns and fellows.
  3. Engaging with staff and partners to determine how to maximize impact through data reporting and helping to ensure programmatic info is complete.
  4. Supporting legal program fundraising and development, including targeted grant writing and reporting as well as meetings with foundations and individual donors.

COMPENSATION:

Salary will be commensurate with an individual’s experience. Benefits include health insurance, retirement, paid parental leave, and some flexibility in scheduling.
