POSITION OVERVIEW Justice at Work is seeking a Development and Communications Director or Coordinator to work closely with its Executive Director to manage a fundraising and communications strategy that is intertwined with our programmatic work. This is an opportunity to 1) help amplify the power of workers in low-paying jobs through strategic, multilingual communications and resource development, and 2) help leverage the resources of the law and the legal community in support of worker organizing. The person who fills this position will oversee individual and organizational giving programs, grant fundraising, fundraising events, and organizational storytelling and communications. We welcome candidates who could grow into this role and share our belief that workers have power, especially when they’re taking action together and equipped with resources and support.

RESPONSIBILITIES The person we hire will work closely with the E.D., and with the support of consultants as needed, to:

Fundraising and Development

1. Manage Justice at Work’s individual giving and annual sponsorship program. This includes organizing team donor drives and overseeing prospecting, cultivation, solicitation, gift processing, data entry, and stewardship of gifts and sponsorships.

2. Support Board of Directors in meeting their give-and-get commitment.

3. Maintain and expand a portfolio of grants from 8-10 foundations. This includes managing grants, writing grants and grant reports with help from the E.D. and other program staff, and working closely with the E.D. and bookkeeper to create and maintain budgets.

4. Oversee special events, including Justice at Work’s annual dance fundraiser; annual celebration; and 1-2 house parties per year.

5. Oversee development systems and development-related administration.

Storytelling and Communications

1. Implement Justice at Work’s strategic communications plan.

2. Oversee the production of multilingual content for our email list, social media, and direct mailings.

3. Run Justice at Work’s bilingual social media accounts (translation support available as needed).

4. Update and maintain Justice at Work’s trilingual website: www.jatwork.org (translation support available as needed).

5. Ensure ongoing and informed consent practices for storytelling with partner organizations and workers.

6. Manage media and reporter relationships and outreach.

Relationship Management

1. Manage our volunteer team.

2. Manage vendor and consultant relationships.

QUALIFICATIONS

We expect to hire someone who:
1. Can interact and collaborate with people from a wide range of cultural contexts.

2. Has ties to working class communities and communities of color and understands the challenges and opportunities faced by workers in low-paying jobs.

3. Is committed to the values and mission of Justice at Work, including to being anti-racist and working on an ongoing basis on anti-oppression skills.

4. Has strong writing and storytelling skills. Bilingual communication skills are preferred. We currently work closely with worker organizations whose members speak Spanish, Portuguese, Mayan K’iche, Cape Verdean Creole, and Haitian Creole.

5. Will enjoy working in a close-knit team while independently managing multiple, often competing, priorities.

6. Is able and willing to work some evenings and weekends as needed.

7. Has 3 to 5+ years experience with social justice nonprofit development and communications work.

Compensation and Benefits: The salary range for this position is $50,000 to $65,000, commensurate with experience. Justice at Work also offers a generous benefits package that includes health insurance; paid vacation, sick, and personal time; paid parental leave; retirement; some flexibility in scheduling; and a paid sabbatical after seven years of service.
