Legal Program Director
Justice At Work is a 501(c)(3) legal services organization founded in 2011 to strategically provide legal support to low-wage worker organizations and their members in order to strengthen worker organizing. Justice At Work envisions all workers having the voice and power to ensure safe and healthy conditions, fair wages, dignity, and respect on an ongoing basis. To accomplish our vision, we build capacity through legal training/education and technical assistance; provide direct legal services as well as access to legal resources and advocacy; and spearhead and/or support workplace- related law reform efforts to improve working conditions.
Justice At Work is seeking a dynamic Legal Program Director to work closely with its Executive Director (E.D.) to oversee and perform Justice At Work’s programmatic work. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to Justice At Work’s overall mission–to support low-wage immigrant worker organizing–and philosophy–that members of affected communities must lead in order for change to be worthwhile and long-term. Accordingly, the candidate will have a deep appreciation for, and ideally past experience in, education and organizing work in low-income worker communities.
The Legal Program Director’s work will include participating in Justice At Work’s Small Claims “Wage Theft” Project, through which Justice At Work partners with worker centers to train non-attorneys and workers on wage and hour law and the small claims courts in Massachusetts (MA). In particular, the Legal Program Director will focus on the “wage court” sessions that Justice At Work and legal services partners are initiating in 2017 in small claims courts. Besides “wage court,” the Legal Program Director will provide training, legal services and strategic counsel to worker committees, such as the Building Justice committee of the Brazilian Worker Center and the Injured Worker Committee of the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health, to help them organize to proactively improve working conditions, including launching both public and private policy campaigns. In addition, the Legal Program Director will act as a liaison and advocate with government agencies, such as the Fair Labor Division of the Attorney General’s Office and the National Labor Relations Board, in coalition with worker center and legal services partners. If the successful candidate is a licensed attorney, this position will include direct representation of worker If the center members in court and at government agencies.
J@W is seeking a committed and highly engaged Legal Program Director for the following:
- Work with Justice At Work’s E.D. to develop and execute a work plan that allows Justice At Work to train worker center members and staff on workplace-related laws, and to provide advice, referral and representation for worker center members with workplace legal issues;
- Attend meeting of the Justice At Work Board, Board Programmatic Committee meetings, and other coalition meetings, as necessary;
- Stay abreast of developments in employment/labor law, especially as it impacts low-wage immigrant workers;
- Maintain and bolster a network of private and legal aid attorneys who serve worker center members;
- Provide training, intake and in-person advice to worker center staff and members on-site at worker centers;
- Represent, or help to represent, worker center members in state and federal courts and with government agencies;
- Supervise, and work with, interns and consultants;
- Perform all programmatic work with a commitment to Justice At Work’s fundraising and reporting needs, including recording data on all programmatic work, capturing testimonials from stakeholders, and attending meetings with foundations, and Justice At Work fundraisers.
The ideal candidate will possess the following professional and personal abilities, attributes and experiences:
- Experience with and/or direct knowledge of low-wage immigrant worker communities, and the challenges and opportunities facing low-wage immigrant workers;
- Strong background in (or a deep commitment to learn) employment (especially wage and hour) and labor law;
- Understanding of and experience with community-based labor organizations;
- Demonstrated commitment to the values and mission of Justice At Work, including addressing class, racial, ethnic and gender disparities;
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and community-based organizations;
- Experience with and/or understanding of public policy analysis and legislative process;
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and meet multiple deadlines;
- Fluency in Spanish, Portuguese, Cantonese and/or Mandarin (strongly preferred);
- License to practice law–preference for MA bar or willingness to take next MA bar – preferred but not required.
Salary and benefits will be commensurate with an individual’s experience and background and be competitive with other salaries in the non-profit legal services sector.
